Summer Brings New Perspectives

Summer break is just around the corner, and for many people this means a change from their usual routine. Often summer plans entail traveling, moving, alone time, internships, and more. Some summer plans are really fun while others can have a weight on our mental wellbeing. However in most cases, the fun and the healthy stress can be good for people. This Summer I would like to challenge everyone to take every opportunity and allow them to shift their perspectives. While it is easy to be anxious and worry about all the what ifs, I believe it is crucial that everyone grows in one way or another.

I personally am an avid traveler, and while yes, I love the photos and glitz that being in a new place entails, I also appreciate everything I can learn. Traveling means exploring new cultures and meeting diverse people. I would like to believe that my perspective might change this summer because I simply will have more life experiences. This change is typically an easier one for people to cope with because it is voluntary, but you still have to be open to being changed.

Also, this summer, my family is moving like I know others might be. This is definitely sad since my childhood home won’t be where I come visit anymore. However, I know this is something my parents need to do. Most people dread moving throughout the entire process because it is stressful, but once you settle into a new place, you really get to see a whole new future ahead of you.

Summers can get busy, but more often than not most people find that they have a good chunk of free time they can use for alone time. This is an especially good opportunity to do some self-reflection. Have you been holding up those New Year’s Resolutions? Are you doing things to get you to where you want to be in 5 years? Are you actually happy? Thinking about your life from an objective viewpoint can help reset your mind and put you on a even better path.

Lastly, internships are so beneficial in today’s society, but they are a lot of hard work. Summer internships allow students to explore different career paths and help them find what they love. I am grateful to be able to have a vastly different internship this year to get a glimpse into the business consulting world. While it is going to make me more tired and stressed, they are healthy low amounts that will benefit me long term.

In general, summer offers numerous opportunities to shift your perspective, you just have to be ready for it. Sometimes changes can have an effect on your wellbeing, but it is important to re-center yourself, so you can truly grow. I hope everyone can open themselves up to new perspectives this Summer!
